Regarding
In 1945, the Food Department was founded as a reaction to the World War II food crisis in India. Originally called the Civil Supplies Department, its offerings included atta, wheat, rice, and sugar. Even after Pakistan's independence, a lot of products were given. Not to mention, there were only three things that the Food Department used to ration: atta, rice, and sugar. Between 1984 and 1985, the Junejo regime deregulated sugar; in 1986, it also deregulated rice and atta. The rationing system was completely abandoned as a consequence. Therefore, it was decided that the government could continue to buy wheat at a support price and sell it to the flour mills at a discount; the discount could then be progressively eliminated over the course of the ensuing years.
Unfortunately, the price of atta turned into a very divisive issue, and the government lacked the political will to cease subsidizing. Subsequently, the subsidy amount has been continuously disbursed, with adjustments based on the quantity of imported wheat eaten, growing transportation expenses, rising jute bag prices, and bank markup rates on loans that the Food Department has obtained.
